It is often useful to look at satellite images on Google Earth to see where there is suitable habitat for different bird species. When we decided to go to see what bird species there were in the undeveloped areas at Changi Business Park we encountered several species of bird that we did not observe anywhere else in Singapore.

And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. Annex II of the Bern Convention lists 45 of Beljarica’s bird species, with a further 91 species in Annex III. Finally, 24 species in Annex I of the EU Bird Directive were recorded in this area.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.

And you’ve posted a link to a petition to an airline to ask them to stop transporting trophies. And I really would have like to know what happens to that land when the industry goes. Conservation is concerned about protecting populations, species, habitats, ecosystems. And that lions are really cute. I’m sorry.

A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

Thanks to industrialization and modern transportation, the various labors required to make beer are often separated by great distances and divided by vocation. For birders who know the importance of being in just the right habitat in finding a particular species, this isn’t at all an unfamiliar idea.

Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas. Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. These trains are over 2kms (1 mile) long and over 200 carriages, so we had quite a long wait at the track!
