Twenty years ago, flocks consisting of a thousand European Turtle Doves were a common sight in Serbia in spring. Turtle Doves have been declining in Europe since the 1970s, and in this century alone, the continent has lost 40% of its population of the species. Ten years ago, those flocks were reduced to a few hundred birds.

He had a legal permit to own them (Conditional Species Permit), and had legally microchipped them according to FWC guidelines. This put Coffee in an impossible position - he needed to rehome the pythons because they were illegal in Florida, but the FWC was threatening to face him with additional criminal charges if he did so.

The coastal delta includes low, scrub-dominated hills and brackish marshes, the habitats with the greatest species richness in moderate zones. Three European Turtle Doves wave their goodbyes from a roadside wire and, a bit further along the road, one Short-toed Snake Eagle is devouring a snake in mid-air.

Marshes are the habitats with the greatest species richness in moderate zones, also significant as breeding, wintering and migratory stopover sites for birds; it therefore comes as no surprise that this one is among the 10,000 Important Bird Areas of the World (one per each bird species?). Circaetus gallicus. Short-toed Snake-eagle.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act.

The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. A lone gosling or duckling is vulnerable to all sorts of predators like raptors, bass, herons, fox, snapping turtles and foxes (just to name a few).
