In total, there are eight species of hornbills in Borneo – the best place to see them seems to be the Kinabatagan River area (also known as Sukau). Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ).

Hotel Mocking Bird Hill is within a short drive and the hotel owners will gladly organize transport and a local guide. For the next 10 minutes the bird walked back and forth between us and we were armed on all sides with video!

For example, hunting is not permitted in most NPS wilderness areas, but it is often allowed in wilderness areas managed by the other agencies. Of course, as places that are largely “untrammeled by man,” wilderness areas also have birds ( 591 species according to one study ) for birders willing to leave roads and infrastructure behind.

According to eBird , 340 species have been observed at the “ Hagerman NWR ” hotspot, which ranks as No. The overall refuge , which includes all of its hotspots, has 344 species. In some instances, the birding is incongruously right next to oil rigs or pads. Those rights were — and continue to be — owned by third parties.

And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there.

It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. Locations, dates, species and numbers, right? Nevertheless, Nagy was right. Backwaters are a hard place to explore.
