Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. Lesser numbers of other common birds also occur; birds like the Gray-crowned Yellowthroat , Inca Doves , saltators, Groove-billed Anis , and other species.

No, wait,Red-shouldered Hawk dragged into the water by the weight of its prey, a giant rat. Redtails hunt at night… sometimes. Heermann’s Gull bills can appear in Great Horned Owl pellets. Unfortunately since this isn’t their usual prey it takes some time. Osprey…? Red-tailed Hawks eat worms.

Inserts in rodent poisons that assure the public they will not kill anything but the offending rats or mice pedal the same questionable claims as those of the snake oil salesmen of bygone days. You will know that bird died from applied pesticides, or see the owl that was hit by a car and realize this was a human-caused consequence.

Here, thousands of Amur Falcons hunt for insects during the southern summer, Wattled Cranes and Denham’s Bustards may be seen, impressive Long-tailed Widowbirds display over the grasslands and the waterbodies are a haven to many hundreds of waterbirds, including Maccoa and White-backed Ducks. One creature that doesn’t budge for the Nuthatch is the Brown Rat, and a pair of these rodents were demonstrating their agility by raiding the bird seed. Unwelcome visitor: a marauding Brown Rat I left Lynford with no unusual sightings, but the satisfaction of lots of close encounters with several of our commonest birds.
