Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

King Alexander I of Yugoslavia was known for his hunting forays into this forest, only months prior to his assassination during a 1934 state visit to France. By law, the foresters should have left 5 mature trees per hectare, but nothing remained. Middle and Great Spotted Woodpeckers as well as the Eurasian Green Woodpecker were heard.

Woodpeckers were quite prominent, both in non-fiction works like the encyclopedia and in entertainment. Yes, you read that correctly – it was seemingly reversing the laws of gravity. I’ve seen this bird hunting, actively denuding dead branches in pursuit of what lies beneath. I was blown away.
