Unless those non-birding folks happen to be duck hunters or love to go fishing, they tend to stay away from the marshes, the riparian zones, the bottom lands. This area is the only place where this species can be seen in Costa Rica. On the way there, we also saw King Vulture, Barred Hawk , and, this Sunbittern ! .

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. It is also clear on their website, which has a tab for “hunting” ) But, to their great credit, they clearly appreciate that North American hunters will have no waterfowl to hunt if they do not fight to preserve wetlands — not only in the U.S. This is only my second sighting of the species on Lake Cuitzeo.

At first, the road is paved, but as soon as the tarmac ends, the tracks become decorated by hunters in orange vests. The soil is disturbed by foraging boars (and there is not a single shot from those hunters). By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air!

I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. With 154 eBirded species almost single-handedly spotted by the UK expat Geoff Laight, the Paljuvi is the latest addition to the top-5 list. With 154 eBirded species, the Beljarica shares the 4th place on the list.

But nevertheless, this part of the country is home to an astonishing variety of birds and a good number of species that are found nowhere else in the US.

These are parts of the state that are unknown to many aside from duck hunters and residents who have vacated for more populous areas. Either would have been a new species for the trip, but no one was comfortable making the case either way. So it goes with rails in coastal North Carolina.
