U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Proposes 2015 Expansion of Hunting and Fishing Opportunities on National Wildlife Refuges

Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. National wildlife refuges provide premier outdoor recreational opportunities across the Nation.

The Birding is Always Good at Cano Negro, Costa Rica

Unless those non-birding folks happen to be duck hunters or love to go fishing, they tend to stay away from the marshes, the riparian zones, the bottom lands. This area is the only place where this species can be seen in Costa Rica. For us birders, visiting a wetland is a no-brainer. This one is an Anhinga.

A return visit to Summer Lake Refuge

The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species. It was mixed in with the American White Pelican, in the photo above. One big surprise for me was a single Trumpeter Swan , complete with neck collar.

Another nice find by the assembled birders was a Bar-shouldered Dove , a species I had only seen in Queensland before this point. I’ve seen the species here and there over the years, but today they were utterly ubiquitous, even our guide had never seen this many. Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo.
