Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. Unless those non-birding folks happen to be duck hunters or love to go fishing, they tend to stay away from the marshes, the riparian zones, the bottom lands. While we scoped and scanned those birds, our main target suddenly appeared… American White Pelican! For us birders, visiting a wetland is a no-brainer.

Injured wildlife are not the most cooperative of patients. Wildlife rehabilitators have an arsenal of equipment and techniques we use to protect ourselves. I was working at the Coastal Wildlife Rescue Center here in Alabama, and he had either been blown in during a storm or caught a ride on a ship.

The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species. It was mixed in with the American White Pelican, in the photo above. One big surprise for me was a single Trumpeter Swan , complete with neck collar.

Local rarities include mouth-watering birds such as Dalmatian Pelican , Slavonian Grebe , Ruddy Turnstone , Asian Desert Warbler , Moustached Warbler and the Calandra Lark. Ecotourism will no doubt arrive soon, and with luck its revenue will prove that there’s more to be gained from protecting wildlife than selling it to hunters.”

I talked to an American visitor from Hawaii who had brought his wildlife-mad son along. Deep Creek didn’t have a whole lot else, but across the road we were able to scout out Narabeen Lagoon, were we spied Ospreys , White-bellied Sea-eagles and Australian Pelicans. Not that we lingered to look, we were on a mission.
