He said the federal government’s and Alaska’s state rules were, for the most part, okay; they were consistent and generally made sense for the safety of both humans and wildlife, and in many respects, coincided with his own views of protecting the native environment. Astonished by this unexpected response, I asked for elaboration.

Their populations, plus those of other species that ‘wore’ the coveted long, colorful feathers used for women’s fashionable hats, were being dangerously depleted by hunters intent on feeding the millinery industry. The late Victorian age was not a good time to be an egret! The book doesn’t always succeed in its goals.

Again, they just want to prevent the "cruel" hunters from killing Bambi's mother. First of all, does he really believe that piffle? Animal activists don't care about the health or welfare of deer herds? What on earth would even give him that idea?

This post, however, is about his poetry, or, rather, one of his poems, “The Bluebird,&# which was first published in Harper’s Magazine in June of 1903. He lives in Forest Hills with Daisy, their son, Desmond Shearwater, and their two indoor cats, Hunter and B.B. “The Bluebird&# is about more then just the bluebird.

Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.
