. …a City Council committee voted 5-0 to recommend a new law that in essence licenses the care and feeding of free-roaming cats as part of a larger effort to reduce their numbers. Nonprofit pet protection groups would manage the program and be responsible for ensuring that cat caretakers take the required steps.

In Thailand, apparently, the number of Oriental Magpie-Robins has seriously declined in some areas apparently, partly because of poaching for the pet bird trade as the birds are good singers ( source ). No surprise then that the species is listed as Vulnerable. Fortunately, they are quite common in Shanghai.
