The arrival of 48 monkeys on a flight from China this weekend has brought Air Canada under fire for shipping primates destined for research laboratories, but the airline says it is obliged by federal law to accept monkeys as cargo. Under pressure from animal rights groups and the public, many airlines have banned the practice.

With their strong flight and capability to disperse, parrots have managed to colonize almost every major island group from Tahiti to Mauritius to Dominica. The Red-fan Parrot breaks the mold by having elongated red feathers with purple tips that it can erect to form a spectacular mane around the head.

Prions are an interesting little group of procellariid, distinct from the gadfly petrels, shearwaters and fulmarine petrels, and I’ll dedicate a post to the group at some point in the future. Fairy Prions ( Pachyptila turtur ) And then there were the “true petrels&# , insofar as that group has any taxonomic meaning anymore.

We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated. Makes sense in retrospect, as I have also seen this species on the rocky northeastern tip of the island within the littoral forest there. After a brief period of no activity on the shore, a small group of Willets in fresh plumage cruised in.

In the Orinoco, the largest observed groups number 30, but average is just above five. When they surface, the tips of the snout, biosonar “melon” and dorsal fins appear simultaneously, the tail rarely showing before diving. and near-endemic Golden-backed Uakari monkeys ( Cacajao melanocephalus ). For a breath of air?

Upon our arrival in late afternoon we explored the nearby Red-capped Manakin Trail and saw a pair of Tawny-faced Quail and managed to photograph a hauler monkey, Spot-crowned Antvireo and a Black-headed Antthrush at dusk. A group of Swallow-tailed Kites played with each other and chased fast White-collared Swifts that raced next to them.
