Discerning both species is relatively straightforward if they are seen together, if the observer concentrates enough on feeding pattern. The litter consists of two males and one female. These births are critical to help preserve the species. These newborn cubs will add to the genetic diversity of the Malayan tiger population and contribute to conservation efforts for the species. There are currently just over 50 Malayan tigers in the Species Survival Plan.

From a birder’s perspective however, this is both a shame and a blessing, as I will show below based on my observations of the species on the island of Java in November. The prinias are a group of around 25 Old World warbler species found in Africa and Asia. The Brown Prinia is an Asian species with a very peculiar range.

Another effect of the bounty of lemmings is other prey species enjoyed a bit of a respite from their position at the bottom of the food chain. We always see one or two of them about town in the spring, this year they are in groups of six or seven. In the evenings as we take our drives, we often find small groups all along our route.

Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Luckily attacks are rare, but we made plans to stay in a refuge cabin at the point, and joined up with a group that had brought a dog, which acts as an early warning system.

With 398 species, Nanhui is trailing far behind despite being covered by a much larger number of checklists (2225 compared to 608). Indeed, during my short time spent at the park, I have encountered all there is to get below Air Panas, with the exception of maybe two to three species (the laughingthrush and the hanging-parrot and maybe something else I have forgotten). Later during the morning the casual groups arrive, those who only walk to the waterfall.
