White-winged Choughs – Corcorax melanorhamphos are native to southern and eastern Australia and one of the bird species that is likely to suddenly make you jump when you walk through a forest. White-winged Choughs tend to be in quite large groups of twenty or more as they feed on the forest floor or roost in the tall trees.

An Emerging Trend

Like the spinetails I discussed previously, each species occupies a unique ecological niche. Forest floor/leaf litter specialists, Golden-crowned Warblers often move in pairs.

High Elevation Birding in Costa Rica at Providencia

Passing through the high oak dominated rainforests of Quetzal National Park, this road can also turn up Unspotted Saw-whet Owls and other species of the night but is much more birdy during the day. Ironically, since the birding was so damn good on the trail in, our group arrived too late to see the early morning quetzal show!

We had taken a trail down from the main path in Kent Park to a shelter to discover several bird species in the area including the White-crested Laughingthrush. Singapore’s Red Junglefowl

Most family groups of Red Junglefowl included around three young birds being fed by the female. The female Red Junglefowl and her young were often observed in the leaf litter. The family group stayed close together feeding and were quite camouflaged with only the sound of the rustling leaves giving them away.
