Also in large flocks were black Common Scimitarbills , part of a group of tree living relatives of the hoopoes that look like pretty much no other bird on Earth. Even a Leopard Tortoise dropped by! Bird waves are a feature of birds all around the world.

It is possible that this migrant has moved on so I headed the short distance to a local rural road, Leopard Drive, where we always find a variety of raptors as well as Horned Larks and occasionally Lapland Longspurs. v=7cFKUm5lPpM On the way out Leopard Road, I stopped to take a closer look at the Horned Larks ( Eremophila alpestris ).

These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc. The Guardian recently published the latest population analysis by the IUCN’s Dhole Working Group that has revealed that the area of occupancy of this species has significantly declined – close to 50% since the previous assessment in 2008!

A group of Wattled Cranes in the Okavango Delta Wattled Cranes are the only African cranes with all-white necks, rendering them unmistakable in the field. They are not bound to wetlands the entire year and large groups of birds will disperse to dry grassland and savanna outside of the breeding season.

Breeding groups typically occupy territories of around 8 hectares and consist of a breeding pair and one or two helpers. Even leopards still live here and occasionally terrorize the African Penguin colony at nearby Betty’s Bay. The species is insectivorous and nests amongst the scree and boulders on the steep mountain slopes.

As the sky darkened and a chill set in, large groups of birds took off in the opposite direction for the interior of the preserve, where they would safely roost for the night. The sun began to set as literally thousands of the birds gathered to rest, feed, and socialize.
