Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. At this very spot, on our first afternoon in the park, and within half an hour of officially beginning our Snow Leopard search, our expert local spotter had exclaimed “ Shan !!” – the Ladakhi name for Snow Leopard.

I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. We also saw a leopard, but it was the A to Z that sticks in the mind. It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold.

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. So, the best way to find a leopard is to find the kill.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

If you cannot share the bird with your guest, try not to share the experience because it makes everything they have seen a little league birding, compared to your mega tick. Consequently, the Ross Sea has become a focus of numerous environmental groups who have campaigned for a world marine reserve. There are five species of seal that have been recorded in the Ross Sea – Crabeater , Weddell , Leopard , Ross (first described during the James Clark Ross’s expedition) and Southern Elephant Seal.
