Good for animals, of course – particularly some shy mammals. Therefore, apologies in advance for the largish number of mammal photos in this post. Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. A juvenile nearby. Blue Sheep. At least they are cute. Tibetan Fox.

Birding the Bear Mountain of Serbia

Chamois is an agile goat-antelope with short hooked horns, found in mountainous areas of Europe from Spain to the Caucasus. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal. Turn-off to a macadam road winding through the forest and… there’s a Chamois on the road! Yes, yes, I know, not countable – it’s not a bird. Never mind, it’s not a bird.

It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. So that New Zealand would end up with quite a few species of animal not originally found here is hardly surprising of itself. But hedgehogs? Greenfinches? What exactly was going on.

Nyala, Southern Africa’s Stunning Antelope

By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox. I’m a big fan of the antelopes, a group that is most commonly associated with Africa but which also occurs in Asia and, if you stretch the term to be cladistically meaningful, Europe and North America.
