Vermont’s Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area was the first place I saw huge numbers of Snow Geese so I was pleased to stumble across this post on VTDigger and see that the birds are still showing up there. If you live in northern New York or Vermont it is well worth a visit!

750+ Geese Rounded Up For Slaughter at Jamaica Bay

New York City’s premiere wildlife refuge proved to be no refuge for Canada Geese on Monday morning as federal agents rounded up 711 geese – including goslings – and packed them up for a trip to upstate New York where they will be gassed and their meat will be provided to food banks.

Finding a Ross’s Goose in a Flock of Snow Geese

Then the accursed listserv had to ruin my peace of mind by letting me know that someone found a Ross’s Goose at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge while I was looking at no-good, lousy phoebe. And the West Pond was covered with Snow Geese , with well over 1,500 birds all around the edges.

Tundra Swan at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. A regional rarity around New York City, Tundra Swans are only regular at Hook Pond in Suffolk County, way out on the eastern end of Long Island. No bells or whistles…er, no fancy field marks on this bird.

At the end of a half-morning’s birding I stopped at the south end of the Cross Bay Bridge, just north of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York. Brant wintering in New York tend to subsist on a diet of eelgrass and sea lettuce.

And, upon closer examination, it had a weird little device attached to the color band.

This cruel, cruel fate we endure in western New York torments man and beast alike. Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend.

This past Sunday I led a birding outing in Queens for New York City Audubon. Waterfowl is defined here as swans, geese, and ducks. Along the way Canada Geese and Brant will be found, and on the bay side of the peninsula Snow Geese , American Black Duck , Mallard , Hooded Merganser , and Common Goldeneye should all be spotted.

of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett has indicated that if enough people write in protest, the proposed hunting season–due to start this December– will be reconsidered. Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.
