Learning the Birds: A Book Review

This all came back to me as I read Learning the Birds: A Midlife Adventure because author Susan Fox Rogers was one of the two birders to find the Ames Henslow’s Sparrow. by Susan Fox Rogers. It’s the subject of the eleventh essay in this collection, almost smack in the middle of the 22 pieces that comprise the book.

Though I had seen four different Western Tanagers in New York and had seen one out west this year already I hadn’t seen one in New York this year. In November in New York that is quite a haul! I did see a Fox Sparrow , a Swamp Sparrow , and the Common Yellowthroat.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of September 2013)

I was predictably pleased to encounter a couple of Black-throated Blue Warblers as well as a Red Fox at Cobbs Hill in Rochester. This weekend was great one for migration in the New York City region and a host of birds made their way in front of his binoculars. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was difficult to choose.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of April 2012)

Luckily, swarms of songbirds arrived on time, including one very handsome Fox Sparrow. Corey had a hard time choosing his Best Bird of the Weekend, but picked his first New York Blue-gray Gnatcatchers of the year, which he saw in Alley Pond Park in Queens. Too bad the hawks and owls couldn’t make it too!
