Sharing our thoughts at Facebook and looking for a place to go now, without a prior plan and early start, the four of us ended up at the nearby Veliko Blato fish farm, swallowed by the city’s recent spread. Soon, an immature White-tailed (Sea) Eagle was above us, with a smallish carp in its talons (click on the photo to enlarge it).

They had been the species I’ve most wanted to see, above any bird or fish or mammal, for many years, and they didn’t remotely disappoint. The superabundance of lions and elephants in the park meant that straying on foot beyond the confines of our fenced enclosure was foolhardy, dangerous and forbidden.

day, I had come home to a scraggy, skittish stray of my own. The process of taking in a stray isn’t usually instantaneous and straightforward. With respect to the stray cat Puck, we eventually learned her name was Jackie. One typical, blue-sky, L.A. But we lured her inside to keep her safe for the night.

The area is known for more than 600 bird species, of which 472 were eBirded by now: Cinereous Vulture , Pallas’s and Lesser Fish Eagles , Ibisbill , Wallcreeper , etc. Other wildlife includes Asian Elephant , Tiger and Gaur (highway 37 passes through the park and the rhinos and wild elephants can be spotted straying near the road).
