Ranging in color from off-white to dingy black, with pastel to gelatinous shades of yellow, orange, purple, and brown in-between, found in moist crevasses, decaying trees, rain-soaked pastures, mushrooms lack the beauty of butterflies and wildflowers cannot equal the action of bats, or flying fish, and certainly lack the spiritual zest of birds.

For those of us in North America other than the Gulf coast, the only time we might see a Magnificent Frigatebird is after a storm. There are excellent resources available, both in print and online ( Birds of North America is an indispensable online resource for the wild bird caregiver). I’m glad we lived.

The Brown Pelican occurs in both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America and northern South America. Both pelicans have a very specialized foraging strategy that depends on abundant fish near the surface. They dive-plunge to scoop-in fish in schools with its long bill and expandable throat pouch.

Cliff Swallows migrate to North America from their wintering grounds in South America to nest in large colonies, sometimes numbering in the thousands. Fish and Wildlife Service.
