Next door to my hometown, the Gulf Breeze Zoo occupies 50 acres near the Santa Rosa Sound. The first time I visited the 30 acre enclosure, I walked the raised boardwalk over the space with eyes wide. On large islands shaded with multiple trees, a family of orangutans and another of gorillas lounged in the green grass.

There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

Not bad given that the 5 families in the inner circle of the laughingthrush family have a combined number of about 68 species. ” As well as in Southeast Asia, there are also Spotted Laughingthrushes (photos taken at Longcanggou and Wolongshan, Sichuan) at the San Diego Zoo. Encountering exotics raises all manner of questions in birders, the toughest of which rarely center on identification. The reason I ask is because my family and I visited the Bronx Zoo this weekend. July often means travel, which sometimes means tourist attractions, which occasionally means exotic or introduced bird species.
