The Amusing Case of the Gulf Breeze Zoo Canada Geese

10,000 Birds

Next door to my hometown, the Gulf Breeze Zoo occupies 50 acres near the Santa Rosa Sound. On large islands shaded with multiple trees, a family of orangutans and another of gorillas lounged in the green grass. A few weeks later, I returned to the zoo, and sure enough, the nest was empty. Had they merely hatched?

Common Moorhens at Hannover Zoo

10,000 Birds

Intriguingly, Common Moorhens are also rather common in Germany’s large ornamental city parks and zoos. I am not referring to the one incident when two Carrion Crows at Basel Zoo suddenly descended on a grazing Common Moorhen and ripped it apart for no apparent other reason than joyful play. Beware of Crocodiles.

No doubt, the Lesser NLT will be relieved not to be bossed around by its erstwhile bigger family member anymore. His obituary was published in Nature.

Boston Zoo May Close and Kill Animals

Critter News

I'm not a fan of zoos on principle. But I know there are good zoos and bad zoos. Unfortunately I think there are way more bad zoos than good ones. But even for a bad zoo, this is awful. A lot of the comments are just about keeping zoos open for families and children. Who would they euthanize?
