In what has become the modern-day traditional method of organization, species are listed and described on the left-hand page and illustrative plates are on the right. Clearly, this is an under-birded country. .

Pepper, the stolen dog who changed American science ," thankfully wasn't called Pepper, the stolen dog that changed American science," so that was an encouraging sign. Pepper was a beloved family pet. I look forward, with a tad of trepidation, to the part about Pepper being a turning point in science. Stay tuned.

It is a fascinating book that teaches while it entertains, that offers research-informed arguments for bird protection and conservation in the guise of vibrant design. It would be a great gift for the novice birder, the experienced naturalist, or a fun read if you want to treat yourself. We are a BirdLife Species Champion!)

Or, Pygmy leaf-folding frogs, Afrixalus brachycnemis, from Tanzania, tiny climbing frogs who lay their eggs in leaves and then fold the leaves over them for protection, sealing the nest with secretions. It is useful as a general introduction as well as for amphibian organization. It turns out there is no scientific difference!

It’s relatively easy to classify birds into family groups based on physical characteristics. It’s very hard to organize the many ways in which human beings relate to avian beings into comprehensible text. We view them as our enemies when they eat our crops and as an extension of our family when we see them at our feeders.
