I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. If you are afraid of spiders, you might want to get a pet Streaked Spiderhunter. I am only joking! Birds should be free. A worrying trend.

I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. Sure, but I just don't think it helps the problem of pet overpopulation. But I can't help wishing she'd go to a shelter and save a cat that needs a family and a home.

I was actually kind of worried I wouldn’t find it, as there is quite a lot of beach to hunt through, but the position was unmistakable when I turned a corner and saw loads of parked cars. There were lots of families with kids, and a van from a local old people’s home, a real cross section of society all intrigued by the visitor.

It’s easy to choke it with food while you’re feeding it and chances are good that you’d raise the chick like a pet and you’d end up with an adult bird that doesn’t know what its predators are and seek humans for food and mating…aka an unreleasable bird. Owls are a little different.

The Plain Sunbird is the plain vanilla version of the otherwise often very colorful family (ok, a very low-budget sort of joke). The only explanation I have for this unequal treatment is that it must be a witch hunt. If that all sounds a bit too exciting to you, why not look at photos of the Brown Fulvetta ?

The species is also hunted for local consumption in Meghalaya (India), according to the HBW. Unlike me, the HBW does not seem to appreciate the species much, stating that it is “hopping about in very ungainly manner.” The site states that in captivity, “two hens can be paired with one male.”
