We had White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes and Grey Fantails in the trees and overhead we observed Brown Falcons, Black Kites, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Blue-winged Kookaburras, Red-winged Parrots and Cockatiels. A Grey Shrike-thrush was vocal and investigating the area that we chose to sit for our lunch.

The sky had been blue when we had left Wiluna a few hours earlier and there was no indication of what was likely to happen to the weather later in the day, but we had pulled in at a rest area about 55kms/34 miles south of the town to investigate the facilities. There were a few rubbish bins and a shelter with a picnic table and benches.

I noticed a silhouette and we investigated and we got our first Pallid Cuckoo for the year. Firstly I almost stood on a Buff-banded Rail and we were both in shock, but it was in even more shock when a Brown Falcon almost took it out of the sky. They tend to use Honeyeater or Magpie-lark nests. At least we didn’t see any snakes!

A Peregrine Falcon launches, ready and willing to utilize the relative invisibility afforded by twilight to bring a swift end to someone’s morning. Much smaller but no less deadly, a Bat Falcon dines on a bat in the mid-morning perched comfortably on a roadside stump. It almost looks as if the bird is underwater!

Mago National Park certainly deserved more exploration and I wished we had time to investigate the well appointed campsites along the Mago River. We finally arrived at a high bend on the Omo River where a Karo village was perched. However we had a much anticipated cultural highlight awaiting us, the celebrated Mursi people.

Now I break (and think that I should put a „I break for birds“ bumper sticker), bins… a falcon! An Eleonora’s Falcon , light morph, makes several circles above the Olive grove and it is gone. Eleonora’s Falcons are migrants themselves. Such a fascinating species.

Am I over-confident in my thinking that we were so interesting that they were investigating us for a good half an hour, until we moved further upriver? Instead of a Pterodactyl, we had one rare Orange-breasted Falcon by the mountain top, which greeted us in the scope-view. Other than that, I have no explanation what were they doing.

Goanna investigating the drop-off. Our walk downstream added a few more bird species including Zebra Finch , Purple-backed Fairywrens , Rufous Songlarks , Black-breasted Buzzard , Black Falcon and Common Greenshank. A goanna wandered into our camp area trying to get to the river for a drink no doubt. Freshwater crocodile.
