These bonus sightings have included a Masked Booby perched on a fishing boat and a few Sabine’s Gulls seen flying past as well as more consistent views of two other gulls commonly seen up north but rarely viewed in Costa Rica; one each of Herring and Ring-billed Gulls !

Fortunately, Tianmashan is probably too hilly to ever be turned into a Tesla factory or a technology park. Pat Fish was the creative force behind a band called Jazz Butcher – he died in October last year. Of course, Little Egrets like to eat fish. So, I need to find something else to say about this species.

Birds use rectal bristles (at the base of the bill) and tiny touch factories called Herbst corpuscles to detect touch. And again, there is great variation amongst different species. Ducks are the avian leaders of bill touch. Herbst corpuscles from the bill of a duck are incredibly elaborate, with up to 12 onion-like layers of touch lamellae.

It is easy to make the argument that one, extractive (hunting, logging, fishing) is bad and the other (birding, diving, hiking) is good, but to my mind this simplistic black and white view point is completely wrong. For starters, not all nonextrative are harmless. Nature won’t respect that line, and neither will most people.
