The “Turkeys” of Costa Rica

That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! In Costa Rica, although I did spend a memorable one years ago in the Osa Peninsula where flocks of parrots flew into the mangroves while we feasted on turkey, pie, and the works, we have no actual Wild Turkeys , nor an official Thanksgiving.

I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. With one Black Stork near them, some 80 LWfG were foraging in the distance, where the sun was just now clearing the mist. Then 20 more joined them, so I entered 100 in my notebook. Camas and Cranes

Today, the camas fields rest protected in the vast bosom of the Clearwater National Forest. Along this journey from pass to valley and back again, we spotted Wild Turkey and Western Wood Pee-wee , Ravens and Red-tailed Hawks , mule deer and elk, even the white-striped tail of a Dark-eyed Junco disappearing into the shadow of the trees.

The Top 25 Target Birds to Look for in Costa Rica

No turkeys up in here, just a big wild and crazy Cracid! Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua.

Here are some highlights and observations of that very birdy weekend at Selva Bananito: There are a lot of pewees that pass through Costa Rica : Based on past experiences of pewee mania, I already knew this to be the case but this trip really took the cake. I think we saw more than 30 Bay-breasteds in one day, in one fairly small area.
