Last visit we enjoyed superb views of a trio of Masked Cardinals , interrupted by the arrival of a Green Kingfisher that was so intent on hunting, it hardly even cast an eye in our direction. Due to the plethora of bird species around, invariably we were to experience something breathtaking.

Hungry Osprey in North Carolina

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. Houston Audubon instituted a ‘no hunting’ policy and by July 1995, there were 50 heron nests on the island, protected from mammalian predators by the large alligators in the waterways. It was amazing.

It is quite a sight to experience hundreds of Abdim’s Stork dropping out of the skies from seemingly thin air, to gorge on burnt or fleeing insects and rodents. This colossal bird is now placed in its own family Balaenicipitidae and it forms an ancient link between storks and pelicans.
