New England Reptile Distributers just released a video explaining a terrible incident involving the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). FWC officers arrived at a reptile facility and forcefully killed 29 reticulated pythons, 5 Burmese pythons, and 1 pregnant Boa constrictor. They respond to pain in the same way.

A lot of these animals are reptiles, spiders and amphibians, which explains the large number. The raid followed an undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. that was allegedly mistreating its animals. This rescue is the result of a PETA undercover investigation. Like this: Apparently it is ethically questionable to create a genetically modified chicken and then hatch it, so approval for that research wasn’t even sought at this stage. The chickens were done in before hatching. This permitted the identification of an autapomorphic median gene expression region in Aves.

I confess that I felt a certain animosity toward the reptile, and have yet to decide whether I will help his or her cousins in the future. But not long ago on a lonely road in northern Connecticut, I stopped to administer similar compassion, only to be stoutly rebuffed by a vicious snapping turtle that refused to be helped.
