My Favorite Mexican Birdsongs

White-striped Woodcreeper : Faraaz Abdool recently wrote about Trinidad and Tobago’s wonderful Woodcreepers , and this one is the Woodcreeper of western Mexico’s pine-oak forests. That emotional connection earned it my #2 spot. If I ever moved away from Morelia, this ringing call would instantly transport me back here.

Paradise Regained

In Mexico they call the Ash-throated Flycatcher “Copetón Triste” , or Sad Crested-Bird; it’s mournful call distinguishes it from other nearly-identical flycatchers of the Myiarchus genus. And this was once a wonderful patch of bird-rich understory. Now it is just… grass. No doubt, my low expectations were key.

It is a bird of the Pacific coast of North and South America, breeding in western Mexico and southern California. The whole ride out to the barrier beaches of Suffolk County was a series of emotional ups and downs as the bird would be found, would disappear, would be refound, and would disappear.

El Pato Mexicano and more Monterrey marvels

Hearts racing and tears of emotion welling up in our eyes! The emotional high of the owl was never going to give this lake a fair chance but even so I would say this spot was the least attractive of the day. Monterrey may be the most unlikely tourist destination in Mexico, but it is worth a visit. What a spectacle.
