The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. But it wasn’t founded to serve as a refuge for human refugees, but animal ones, specifically elephants. And elephants are always overwhelming anyway. Tembe Elephant Park is a mosaic of savannah and forest.

The monkeys made sense; many species of apes and monkeys are adaptable to many climates and are similar to humans in terms of anatomy. When I say animals, I was thinking more of large mammals (elephants, buffalo, cheetahs etc…) but other animals are welcome except for obviously domesticated ones. The giraffes did not.

Africa is famous for its large, charismatic mammals, and the Big Five epitomize the most sought-after of these fantastic beasts. As visitors’ and the public’s interests expanded from the Big Five, and an appreciation for lesser mammals, birds and smaller wildlife has became more widespread, the term Little Five was coined.

As we humans are animals, like birds are, it often seems to make more sense to me to assume that their and our drivers are similar, not different. Of course, we humans tend to give slightly elevated terms to our motives – but that does not generally mean that they are really different from those of other animals. Birds, maybe?

Each one of the sleek, whiskered sea lions recovering at the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro has its own story. Some of the damage was caused by humans who shot, clubbed or threw so-called seal bombs at the mammals. From the Contra Costa Times. Others swim, play and jostle with one another.

When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. Cattle Egret has been introduced by humans to Hawaii and the Seychelles.

In some ways the the flowering of the antelopes as an evolutionary group mirrors our own story, as they benefited and spread widely as the world’s forests gave way to savannah and plains, just like humans. With an elephant for scale.
