Some might contest this, saying that Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hatches An Egg precedes Eastman’s book by twenty years. But since Horton is an elephant, and since the creature that hatches from the egg is an elephant-bird, I’m going to wait till 10,000 Birds does a Hybrid Bird Week before discussing this representative of the Seussiverse.

At sea there are also New Zealand Sea Lions and Southern Right Whales. The Centre takes kiwi eggs from the wild, when they are vulnerable to introduced predators, and rears them until they are old enough to survive in the wild. This is a good place to see the endangered and beautiful Yellowhead and the endemic Yellow-eyed Penguin.

She turned, looked, and by the expression on her face I guessed she was thinking “Goodness, I’m glad that was not a lion.”. Have you ever seen the Dryfus Lion? I new him because we enlisted his Dryfus Lion and one of his tigers to carry out experiments with bones (this is something archaeologists do). Unless we put them there.

African buffalos have excellent eyesight, hearing, and a sense of smell that helps them detect the presence of lions, their greatest enemies. They are the heaviest and largest living birds, with adult common ostriches weighing anywhere between 140-320 lbs and laying the largest eggs of any living land animal.

Tall grass, grass in burnt areas, leaves stems, small mammals, large mammals, invertebrates, birds, bird eggs, even hyena feces (that’s the Leopard Tortoise). The Big Five–Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, African Elephant and Rhinoceros–were historically the main mammal attraction of Kruger.

The quills of the “Saqu Ettair” Secretarybirds feed on small lizards, insects, rodents, birds eggs and, of course, snakes. As do a diverse suite of other wildlife from lions and zebras to ground squirrels and meerkats. Coursers, larks, korhaans and other dry country specialists abound here.
