Europe’s Brown Warblers: a map through the maze

10,000 Birds

'If, by a chain of peculiar events or by purposeful decision, you find yourself somewhere in central Europe, you sooner or later will not be able to avoid seeing a little bird, usually the size of a House Sparrow or smaller, with a slender bill, a rather vertical posture, which will be hopping through some dense vegetation, and which you will have to accept as being a WARBLER.

Gray Kingbird: An Awesome Parking Lot Bird

10,000 Birds

'Parking lots in Miami-Dade county offer a mostly standard assortment of birds compared to the rest of the United States. We have House Sparrow , Rock Pigeon , and European Starling like almost everyone else along with the usual Ring-billed Gulls that join them in winter. Sure, we also have Common Myna and Boat-tailed Grackle which would be pretty special to most who do not live in Florida.

Another Great Shorebirding Day at Jamaica Bay

10,000 Birds

'Saturday morning, 30 August 2014, was a perfect time for shorebirding at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s East Pond. The high tide was set for late morning so I could take my time getting out there, the sun was going to be out providing enough light for some good digiscoping, and we had a three-day weekend so I could spend more time than usual without really shorting my family.

What makes a good bird guide – your saying

10,000 Birds

'My last blog has created quite a discussion among the readers, mostly from US, but also southern and eastern Africa and Europe (apologies if I forgot some region). They were commenting where they felt most at home – on their favourite FB pages (predominantly American Birding Association). I found those comments insightful and inspiring, valuable experiences and opinions worthy of sharing to a wider audience than the FB groups where they were initially posted.

A Brown Booby in Queens

10,000 Birds

'On Friday morning, 29 August, I had the good fortune of being able to work from home. What that meant for me, birding wise, is that I could get out for a few hours in the morning and then get home and get to it on my laptop without having to worry about things like showering, getting dressing, or commuting. And seeing as there were good northwest winds overnight, weather radar had shown lots of birds taking off, and the winds were expected to continue from the north through the morning, I decid

Bokmakierie

10,000 Birds

'I have never quite made up my mind how this beautiful bush-shrike’s name should be pronounced. I favour stressing the penultimate syllable with a long “…eeee…”, and fading away on the final note. Rather like the “C**k-a-doodle.” of “C**k-a-doodle doo” The name is born of the song which can be written as Bok-bok makeer.

“Winged Warnings” Sounds the Avian Alarm

10,000 Birds

'When birds go from Least Concern to Near-Threatened to Vulnerable to Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature scale of species viability, people often race to raise awareness and save the at-risk species. Which is good, and necessary. But this hyperfocus can also mean seeing the proverbial trees while myopically not noticing the forest.

High Noon Birding in the Mountains of Los Angeles

10,000 Birds

'[If you are looking for my first-Tuesday-of-the-month book review, it will be in this spot next week. For now, I present a story of an excellent day''s birding on a visit to Los Angeles last week.]. It was 7:04am when we saw our target bird. Scaly-breasted Munia , formerly Nutmeg Mannikan, is supposed to be easy to find in southern California in late August (just check the eBird graphs), but the established exotic had eluded me till Catherine Hamilton and Luke Tiller invited me to bird their sm

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of August 2014)

10,000 Birds

'Since we in the U.S. are enjoying a long weekend, you got extra time to establish a Best Bird of the Weekend. Did Monday morning birding make a difference? While I saw plenty of cool birds this weekend, including at least 10 Common Nighthawks, I was most engaged by a veritable swarm of Cedar Waxwings skimming along the surface of a pond for flies like swallows.

Palmerston birding

10,000 Birds

'Following on from our long drive from Broome to Kununurra, where we visited the Poo Ponds before catching up on sleep, we headed on north. We were soon over the border and we left Western Australia to enter the Northern Territory. We didn’t have time to stop and visit the Keep River National Park this year, because we had to get ourselves as far as Palmerston before sunset and we had just lost 1 1/2 hours as we crossed the border.

Getting the Hang of Royal NP

10,000 Birds

'Not all birding sites are created equal. Some sites have birds in such abundance you’re left shell-shocked, others are so grueling and demanding you are left wondering why you started birding in the first place. Some are very ordinary and average, and some complicated in ways that take some figuring out. Royal National Park, south of Sydney in Australia, is one such place.
