Diabolical Fall of 2017 Wood-Warbler Quiz

10,000 Birds

It is autumn, the time of year when wood-warblers are allegedly at their most difficult. But that isn’t tough enough for 10,000 Birds readers: no, we have to make things a bit more, shall we say, diabolical? Yes, that’s right, it is time once again for a diabolical identification quiz on 10,000 Birds! The only clues you get on this quiz are that all three images were taken in Queens in the last two weeks and all three pictures are of wood-warblers.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

10,000 Birds

Growing up in central Oregon, allowed me to experience such a diverse amount of habitat, and the wildlife that resides there. It is a high desert, with sagebrush flats, surrounded by Ponderosa Pines, yet we still have large waterways, for waterfowl and shorebirds. Many refuges in this part of the state, like Malheur refuge, Summer Lake Refuge, and Tule lake Refuge all get the lion’s share of acclaim, and publicity, and deservedly so.

Birding the Sittee River

10,000 Birds

While in Belize back in August one of the outings we signed up for was a boat ride along the Sittee River, a mangrove-lined and placid river that flows into the Caribbean just south of Hopkins. We met our guide in the late afternoon and took the short golf cart ride to the marina where he dropped us off on a dock and went to get the boat. (He’s returning for us in said boat in the photo up top.).

Water Feature Visitors

10,000 Birds

We have a small water feature off our back porch. It’s probably about 300 square feet in size, holding maybe 2000 gallons of water. In addition to nest boxes around the property and bird feeders in the yard, the water feature is our most efficient wildlife magnet. Birds, in particular, can’t resist running water. Even though Eurasian Collared-Doves have encroached on my property, I still enjoy the company of Mourning Doves ( Zenaida macroura ).

Where Are You Birding This Fourth Weekend of September 2017?

10,000 Birds

Whether you’re celebrating a new year or just a particularly birdy period of an ongoing one, you will hopefully find this weekend to be a very special one. Keep your eyes and minds open. I’m happy to be heading down the Delmarva Peninsula to the Chincoteague area, where the birds fly fast and furiously. Corey will be staying around NYC and leading a Sunday bird walk in Kissena Park.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of September 2017)

10,000 Birds

Certain seasons demand as much birding time as a person can spare, and sometimes even more than that. But be sure to set aside a minute or two during even the height of migration to share news of your sightings. Birding is one of those activities much improved by the stories told by its enthusiasts. For example, I heard tell of a wave of Philadelphia Vireos being spotted recently along a certain segment of the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Goanna Creek Rest Area

10,000 Birds

Driving along the Carpentaria Highway from the Amungee Rest Area where we had stopped for lunch and enjoyed the company of well over one hundred Apostlebirds we reached the Goanna Creek Rest Area. It was approximately 128 kilometres/80 miles and the road was in fairly good condition with sections of it being single lane bitumen and very little traffic.

Trinity Brewing: Le Capitaine Golden Saison Regal

10,000 Birds

Here in New York, fall doesn’t begin until this afternoon at 4:02 PM, so I got in what will probably be this year’s first and last review of a saison – a classic and refreshing Belgian beer style generally favored for summer drinking – just under the wire. Which isn’t to say that this week’s eccentric beer – Le Capitaine by Trinity Brewing – is a particularly characteristic example of a saison anyway.
