The Best Birding Locations in the United States (according to ChatGPT)

10,000 Birds

The rapid growth of ChatGPT – an artificial intelligence chatbot – has been remarkable. ( Here are primers on how it works.) But does ChatGPT have even a rudimentary understanding of a niche topic like birding? I asked it a few questions about birding locations and the (unedited) results are below, along with some brief analysis. My high-level impression is that ChatGPT can synthesize lots of information and produce results that initially seem impressive, but that it still makes obvious mistakes

What animal has skin flaps that can open to reveal white fur?

Reddit Animals

I swear I'm not crazy, I saw this on Instagram a while back and I can't remember what it was. I looked everywhere on Google but it's only giving back Dewlaps. I'm pretty sure it was a deer or goat that was common knowledge about its existence but never saw in real life. It opened its flaps on its chest to show white fur underneath that most of us assumed was just there and not hidden under two folds of skin.

Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 1

10,000 Birds

May is a busy month for birds migrating through Shanghai – and of course, last May was completely missed due to the lockdown. So, I spent a lot of time birding this month, and to keep this post at a manageable length, it mostly only covers the first half of May. It starts with a bird I last saw (and wrote about) in December last year, the Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher.

After the recent Gorilla vs Grizzly thread I think this is needed: Gorilla myth busting

Reddit Animals

Claim 1: A gorilla can definitely kill any animal below 400 lbs easily and still put up a good fight for those above that weight class The truth: Forest leopards in Africa are known to kill gorillas, and while rare, the current record is skewed heavily in favor of the leopard coming out the better in these encounters. Jungle leopards are in general larger than their savanna cousins, but they are nevertheless just about the same size as a human.

Should I keep a baby British blue tit ?

Reddit Animals

A baby British blue tit entered my apartment, possibly attracted by my canaries, and my dad placed it in an old cage. The cage is kept closed to prevent the bird from escaping, despite its parents flying around outside. I considered trapping the parents, but realized they might have other dependent babies that need to be fed. I'm unsure about what to do with the baby blue tit and feel guilty, as it has been singing continuously.

Goose has angel wing did we catch it early?

Reddit Animals

Recently we saw her wing growing out weirdly and we thought I was normal because it didn’t happen with our ducks and we fed them the same feed we recently found out it got angel wing from the feed having too much protein. We got some wrap too wrap it up she don’t seem too be in any pain if it does cause pain. The main question I’m trying to ask is if we caught it early or is it too late?

Baby squirrel question

Reddit Animals

Despite the presence of a dog, a grey squirrel decided our yard was the place to dig a hole and apparently create a burrow. I did not know that type of squirrel burrowed like that - I thought they made nests in trees! Today the dog started digging at the hole in the ground. We called him off but a young squirrel appears to have been displaced. The dog chased it before we realized and now this young squirrel is hunkered down in the corner of the yard.
