I’ll fly tonight to the magical kingdom of Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

Tonight I’m going to fly to the magical kingdom of Costa Rica, to reset and restart at Rancho Naturalista. This lodge has the longest checklist among the eBird hotspots of Costa Rica – over 55 % of the nation’s total, including about 40 hummingbirds. Five years ago, I spent a day there and met Lisa Erb, the manager and owner, but also a former bird guide.

Looking for Lost Warblers at Parque Rio Loro, Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

In the world of birding, we have our stars, the birds that lift our spirits and provoke oohs, aahs, and admiration. These are the birds that make us race to the nearest park, scan refuge headquarter trees with anxious eyes, and turn some of us into temporary paparazzi. The stars of the bird world take many forms and fame is often related to location but some species, some cool groups of birds are accorded priority no matter when or where they are seen.

Grey-tailed Tattlers return to Cable Beach

10,000 Birds

This week we have had very big tides and the migratory shorebirds that have returned to Broome from the Northern hemisphere have struggled to find any beach left to roost on at high tide. The roost sites in Roebuck Bay become inundated with the ocean and the shorebirds will move further afield to find a suitable roost. Gantheaume Point , the Port of Broome and Cable Beach become an alternative roost site during the very big tides, but for some of the shorebirds it can mean flying around until th

The Fallen Yellowlegs

10,000 Birds

Yesterday morning was simply one of those incredibly eventful birding sessions, about which I may expound upon in parts within the coming weeks. After several (relatively) run-of-the-mill birding missions within the rainforest and along the coasts of Tobago over the last few weeks, we kept getting our socks knocked off while birding the wetlands of southwest Tobago yesterday.

October Global Big Day in Costa Rica- an eBird Trip Report

10,000 Birds

Global Big Day has become an annual collective event in May that encourages thousands of people to watch birds on the same date. As far as promoting birding goes, the only thing better might be October Gobal Big Day ! In Costa Rica (and, I gather, some other tropical places), our local birding community gets involved in both GBDs but we’re especially pleased with the one in October because for those of us on the flyway way south of northern breeding grounds, the 10th month is our “Ma

Learning the Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state. Although Henslow’s had been reliably found in nearby Sharon Springs for many years, the last documented sighting was in 2008, and the sighting startled longtime birders, waking them up to the fact that breeding sites in the state were rapidly being lost.

Birding Hluhluwe, South Africa

10,000 Birds

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa – it was established in 1895. It is thus much older than the Hold Steady song “ Heavy Covenant “, which was only released in 2021. The quality is similar though (on a highly abstract level). Despite its rather toxic-looking colors, the African Green Pigeon is trapped for food in Ghana.

It’s 11 O’Clock. Do You Know Where Your Red-eyed Vireos Are?

10,000 Birds

I haven’t watched nightly news in a while, actually, never really watched it as a kid either. However, I remember it, even if not for any of the news items. As a kid, I had more important things to think about than local happenings being divulged by someone in a suit. If a reporter would have rambled on about fishing or bird migration or the biggest, oldest trees in the area, I would have been all ears but no, I don’t recall any reporting on such esteemed subjects as those.

Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens at Geikie Gorge

10,000 Birds

We try to make a trip to Geikie Gorge each year to go bush-walking and birdwatching, but the area is only open for a few months each year. Typically the area is open from around April to October, but this can vary a lot due to flooding rains or bushfires. Last year we were able to visit in May , but this year we had not been able to visit until this last weekend.

An Embarrassment of Riches

10,000 Birds

I am embarrassed. In fact, I was already embarrassed two months ago, when the pandemic and at-home duties had forced me to write about the same michoacano birds for a couple of years running. (It’s a good thing that I can access some 300+ michoacano birds! But, still.). So I was excited to finally get to take a trip to Spain and the Middle East that we had originally planned… for the ill-fated month of March, 2020.

The Oriental Scops Owl

10,000 Birds

The Oriental Scops Owl is possibly my favorite of all bird species (though I may have said that about other species as well) – so, here’s a post with just some photos of this owl taken this autumn migration season. The highly recommended photographic guide “Owls of the world” describes it as a “very small owl with visible ear-tufts” (though not actually on this first photo).

Increasing Intervals

10,000 Birds

As averse as some of us are to mathematics and its concepts – just as many of the scientific disciplines have been our attempt to explain natural occurrences, so too mathematics is an explanation of how life unfolds. Birding is no different – especially when done naturally. At the complete mercy of chance, birds show and hide themselves based on a combination of factors which can all be condensed to a function of time and space.

What’s Up with the ABA? — Proposed Changes to Bylaws

10,000 Birds

The American Birding Association has a relatively new Executive Director ( Nikki Belmonte ) and changes are coming. One proposal is modernizing the Bylaws, which govern the structure and operation of the ABA. Most of the proposed changes are sensible, but, as described below, one is troubling. In the October 2022 issue of Birding , there is a note from Ms.
