In his first chapter, on the Raven, Moss is an enthusiastic borrower from Bernd Heinrich’s classic The Mind of the Raven , and in chapter ten (about which more below) a good deal is sourced from a 2022 book, The Bald Eagle , by Jack E. They were barely mentioned in The Voyage of the Beagle and not at all in On the Origin of Species.

And I didn’t pay enough attention because one very dark eagle flew by at the same time, an adult Greater Spotted Eagle. Two hundred yards further, we found another Greater Spotted Eagle! Here in Serbia, in the south of the continent, this species is a proper rarity. The first idea was, it is probably wounded by poachers.

Their habitats vary widely in both rural and urban landscapes; open habitats are preferred and the species generally shuns only extensively forested areas and wetlands 1. Its great diversity of habitats hosts an incredible bird count of over 900 species, including Africa’s 2nd highest list of endemics and near-endemics (after South Africa). They adorn their bodies with decorative scarification, a painful process of slicing into the skin and rubbing the wounds with charcoal. Yellow-billed Stork.

Due to the large number of specialty and range-restricted species it is a must-visit destination for any South African birder who wants to surpass the 800-mark of a Southern African life-list. We stopped, wound down the window and started making squeaking sounds by rubbing our fingers over our teeth.

Sometimes it is too late, as they are deceased and Brahminy Kites and White-bellied Sea-Eagles usually take advantage of the situation. The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. I hope you enjoy these photos!

Sometimes I just want to hug eBird, or more specifically, whoever writes the short species descriptions (even though I am not the typical hugging kind of person, trust me on this).
