Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Two species of icterids populated the area, the presence of either was a direct indicator of the degree of water present. Both are direct results of the pet trade.

So, the basic idea is to show 15 species of Australian birds in each post and give you the usual trivia about them. This species has also eliminated the need for childcare – the chicks emerge from this pile on their own and never even get to see their parents. Similarly, the Grey Shrikethrush is neither a shrike nor a thrush.

People came to see what it was all about, with their children and pets, rambling around the green oasis for the first time. Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all. We can, of course, count wild, native, species. We can count vagrant species that made it to the area we are in under their own power. We can count introduced species that have met the criteria of the “Bird Police” for the area to which they are introduced. First of all, I don’t have a pet rooster.

The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. The introduction of exotic animals has extirpated and continues to threaten hundreds of species. It is quite simple.

Ever since I learned that the Muscovy Duck I discovered in a Central Park pond was not countable by ABA standards, I’ve grappled with the question of “What is Wild?” Let’s stop treating restorations of native species (be they condors, Aplomado Falcons , or whatever) in the same way as we treat introductions of exotics.
