This 90 acre lake, managed by Arizona Fish and Wildlife is about a 45 mile drive from Tucson, and 9 miles from Mexico, as the Chihuahuan Raven flies. The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees. One raft along had over 380 birds in it.

Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. In addition to interesting fish views, the glass-bottomed boat tour and clarity of the spring in general provided an unparalleled opportunity to see diving Double-crested Cormorants and Anhingas.

We had a pair of Brahminy Kites positioned rather nicely on beach debris as they considered their next fishing trip out onto the reef. They are extremely good at flying low and collecting fish from just below the surface, but the shorebirds still feel threatened by them and they do sometimes take them.

Let’s explore some of these far-off places and the birds that find shelter here. Its numbers are declining rapidly due to feral cats and this duck is currently listed as vulnerable. Two of the remotest islands in the world are Easter Island in the South-eastern Pacific and Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic.

From our base, which has been Foster for most of the time and Fish Creek over recent weeks, I have walked the stretch of Rail Trail from Foster to Fish Creek several times. I have walked from Foster to Fish Creek and back in a day or just walked in one direction or shorter sections from either end. Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo.
