When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Fish will lose their spawning ground, otters and White-tailed Eagles will be no more.

The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. The autumn migration has clearly started.

Because they aren’t fishes, but – Eurasian Otters!

Yet, there was a dark spook in the tree-crowns, a largish raptor, and I wasn’t ready! I usually forget about the World Wetland Day, 2nd of February, but this year I remembered.

Consequently, my first local patch becomes a largish Danube River floodzone opposite to Belgrade (Serbia) city centre (cover photo: April 1992). To avoid the predator, the duck – dived, and that was the only time ever to observe this species doing so. All dabbling ducks can dive, but rarely do.

While Serbia claims to strive towards the EU membership, it is back to the Chinese credit and Chinese environmental standards. The Convention on Migratory Species (the Bonn Convention) lists two of these species – the Ferruginous Duck and the White-tailed Eagle – in Annex I, with a further 64 species in the Annex II.
