This fear of the dark and deep is the reason why I am happy and grateful every day I wasn’t born a duck. Seriously, ducks must be the toughest creatures ever, the Chuck Norrises of the bird world, because they endure this thing all the time. He doesn’t go there for the ducks, but for the fish.

Intriguingly, Common Moorhens are also rather common in Germany’s large ornamental city parks and zoos. At these places they are neither shy nor reed-dependent but can often be seen grazing on lawns like cows or swimming on open ponds no less visible than a rubber duck in a bath tub. Beware of Crocodiles.

There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

The reason I ask is because my family and I visited the Bronx Zoo this weekend. Turacos, hornbills, and diverse ducks were far more interesting than the robins and catbirds scrounging around the exhibits. Encountering exotics raises all manner of questions in birders, the toughest of which rarely center on identification.

Many birds around the world in the Robin family ( Turdidae ) are favorites due to their musical songs. The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. A three generation family in Choluteca checking out a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl in their backyard Better yet. We will take charge of the prosecution.

But it wasn’t all that diabolical when you consider that it was the Queens Zoo that served as the setting and I also left this clue: “a knowledge of what birds can be seen in my fine borough will be of great assistance to you.&# Those who are really familiar with Queens should know what birds are in the zoo named for our borough.

The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. During 1990s, the South China Tiger became extinct in the wild (some still survive in zoos) and the number of extinct races reached four. Very dusty Swarovski CLs.
