This bird used to be quite common in Germany, but now it is rare. It sometimes makes a rather strange croaking noise, a bit as if a dog tries to bark but does not know how to do it properly. But it is a very interesting-looking and unique bird with its crest and its combination of black, white, and cinnamon colors.

I left the area before the old reservoir was converted to a reserve, but I used to walk my dog in another of the neighbourhood’s reservoirs (which is also now a small reserve) and so I have long been keen to go back to my old stomping grounds and see the WWT London Wetland Centre.

The domestic dog was once and still often is Canis familiaris as opposed to the wolf, Canis lupus , but the former which is really a subspecies of the latter is now Canis lupus familiaris. Dates of first arrival listed by Schorger (1966) are: Italy 1520, Germany 1530, France 1538, England 1541, Denmark and Norway 1550, Sweden 1556.

In Germany, they occur throughout but are considerably rarer e.g. around the Baltic or Berlin than they are in the SW. My ears perk up with every new song, my tail wags (ok, not literally, but darn close) every time I see or hear about a newly-returned migrant. Maybe they are not so fond of coastal climates that get cold during the winter?

The grackles might well be found here anyway as they like the wet habitat in Florida, but as an extra enticement, visitors feed the alligators with hot dogs and there is always a little something left over for a cheeky omnivore. Boat-tailed Grackles count eggs and chicks as part of their diet and they were well represented here today.
