Hawk-Eagle Sweep in Costa Rica

The three huge eagles are lottery winner rare and the Orange-breasted Falcon has never been documented for the country but the rest are seen here and there on an annual basis. If a large, powerful bird of prey capable of terrorizing a Wild Turkey comes to mind, that may be a fair definition of a hawk-eagle.

The Longest (and Shortest) Hour

Everyone from the BBC to National Geographic has been on its shifting sands documenting these ocean giants. This large, arboreal turkey-looking bird is endemic to Trinidad and recent estimates put their total numbers at around 300 individuals. The village has been featured in various documentaries and magazines over the years.

Happy New Year?

While this allows for the delightful prospect of Thanksgivingakkah, with attendant turkey dreidels and whatnot, it does raise certain perennial questions of the nature of time itself, as applied to birding. Rosh Hashanah, the New Year of the Jewish calendar, has come relatively early season-wise this year. It’s a good time.
