Frankly it all began when his pinky nail was removed, and my husband thinks perhaps a nerve was damaged or the pinky nail on a greyhound is far more important to balance and gait than you might think. The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. Of course, that also rendered her defective and she was therefore immediately "discarded." But now, of course, I want more. There she is. She has beaten the odds and made it another year. If they've raced, you subtract a year for each year of racing. We do what we must.

An update that of course thrills me is that Jamaica has decided to not grant permission for the introduction of greyhound racing (read the l etter from Bruce Golding, Jamaica's Prime Minister--it's only two sentence long, but it does the job). A less-than-thrilling update is that South Africa is still considering dog racing.

When I saw the Live Science article about dogs being as smart as 2-year-old kids I knew that if there were any talk of ranking, my beloved greyhounds would be at the less-desirable end of the list (not from personal experience, but from reputation), and I also knew that there would be a whiff of speciesism. Much of the baby clothing has animals on it, and animals are of course the focus of stuffies and other toys. I chose a cow for Sky's first stuffed animal, and I hope that she will grow up to honor and respect the lives of cows the same way she will honor and respect the lives of greyhounds. She can always choose justice and respect.
