As I said in an earlier post , I was curious whether an ornithological conference would be interesting to a birder, so I plunked down $50 for registration and planted myself in front of Zoom for several hours a day.

Emerging birding destinations: Serbia

For 3-4 days, opt for the hills, Tresnjica Griffon Vulture Sanctuary and the nearby Tara Mountain National Park with 140 species (not too much, but with Hazel Grouse , Ural , Pygmy and Tengmalm’s Owls , White-backed and Three-toed Woodpeckers among them). Long-eared Owls of Kikinda. Great Bustard Sanctuary.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of January 2014)

I could have chosen any of the four Snowy Owls I saw this weekend as myBest Bird of the Weekend but I decided that I preferred a Purple Sandpiper at Breezy Point, Queens, (pictured above) mostly because it was feeding on a jetty while waves crashed over it. Of course both Mike and I were out and about spotting some birds this weekend.
