This is not a surprise as both pastimes tap into my primeval desire to hunt. In many cases, myself included, the desire manifests itself in less apparent ways than going out and killing something for the trophy wall. I don’t need to kill something to feel the rush of the hunt. It consumes me.

The group has a worldwide distribution; 28 species living and two additional extinct. Both extinct species were island-dwelling and flightless, suggesting a propensity of the group to disperse over long distances , a characteristic that any birder in late summer is familiar with. The species was in the news because some scientists had finally managed (or bothered – it’s much the same thing) to locate the population high in the mountains of the Solomon Islands, and catch and photograph one.
