While eating lunch with Daisy and her family at a picnic area in Joshua Tree National Park the other day a small chipmunk-looking creature ventured out of the rock formation we were eating next to. The cute little critter was clearly looking for a handout which we did not provide.

That’s right, I, along with my family and some really good friends, was camping. The Eastern Chipmunks sure enjoyed the fact we had a five-year-old and a four-year-old at our campsite. No, I wasn’t being punished, the apocalypse had not come, and I was putting myself through these privations voluntarily!

A bit alarming, given the events of the last few weeks in Missoula, but after years of close encounters with chipmunks and ground squirrels I have finally gotten to have a pretty good idea of a rodent when I hear one. A loud chirp rang from the side of the mountain, and a handful of stones skittered down the talus slope.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. Try to get it too another family group or contact a wildlife rehabber. That is probably one of the adults.

I have a day in Sydney with my sister and family and then go home to Broome… hopefully not delayed by the threat of a Qantas baggage handlers strike starting Tuesday morning as I try to fly north-west. Well, as you read this I will be sitting on an aeroplane heading from Busan to Hong Kong to Sydney… time to go home!
