A bit alarming, given the events of the last few weeks in Missoula, but after years of close encounters with chipmunks and ground squirrels I have finally gotten to have a pretty good idea of a rodent when I hear one. But global climate change is by no means the only way that humans can throw a wrench into those gears.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. That’s an old wives’ tale that says bird won’t take care of a baby bird with a human smell on it–not true at all.

I have a day in Sydney with my sister and family and then go home to Broome… hopefully not delayed by the threat of a Qantas baggage handlers strike starting Tuesday morning as I try to fly north-west. Well, as you read this I will be sitting on an aeroplane heading from Busan to Hong Kong to Sydney… time to go home!
