Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis.

Black Mud, Floating Onions, and Great Birds – A Day’s Birding in Orange County, New York

There were three of us that made the trip to the famed Black Dirt region of Orange County, New York yesterday. We had as our goals spotting the reported Cattle Egret and Blue Grosbeaks and as many shorebirds as could be found in the flooded environs. We were there for the birds! More impressive was the agricultural scenery.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of July 2019)

i got my fill of cygnets and goslings this weekend, but the best sighting was an adult Cattle Egret that apparently didn’t realize how far Upstate New York was from wherever it should be. Of those species, his favorite was a young Killdeer , which easily became his Best Bird of the Weekend.

This fall, I have had the fortune of listening to both species calling at the same time from the back balcony. Cuckoos are up There. At times, Red-eyed Vireos can be just as abundant.

A New Year Begins! But First–A Celebration of My 2018 Top Ten Birds

For some reason, even though there are Mandarin Ducks in zoos throughout New York City, this escapee has become an internationally known tourist attraction, even heading the New York Times list of “Five Times the Internet Was Actually Fun in 2018.” I easily spotted the Whooping Cranes in the cattle field.
