The former should number at least a hundred thousand individuals each winter, while the latter should be present in the tens of thousands. Mexican Ducks were also present; these are residents in the area, but not normally on this body of water. Two Ospreys flew overhead, turning up again and again to fish on this small body of water.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

While entering our double kayak I asked Andrew Hester, a local bird expert, if bilharzia is present in the shallows of the Ngotwane Dam, further down the river. albiventris ) and fish eating Pied Kingfishers ( Ceryle rudis ). Among 60 or so heron species in the world this is the only one using this peculiar fishing technique.

There are no trails as such, but you can follow in the cattle tracks along the edge of the river or the gravel tracks used by vehicles.
