We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake. We were soon in Pasir Ris Town Park and observing a huge variety of birds. Black-naped Oriole.

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. Well, the Dusky Eagle-Owl was big too, but for some reason, the Fish-Owl seemed huge. It was a big owl. And this is what we saw.

There are no trails as such, but you can follow in the cattle tracks along the edge of the river or the gravel tracks used by vehicles. There was a family of Black-necked Storks that was initially a family group, but over recent weeks they have started to feed separately.

Moreover, the pair I saw was feeding from a livestock trough alongside a group of cattle. On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. Then he pointed out a Least Tern that came in to hunt for fish on the pond as if I would be assuaged with another bird that has “Least” in its name! We never even got out of the car!

Somehow I did not think Cattle Egrets would eat dragonflies (shouldn’t they eat beef, at least judging from their name?) Lesser Coucals still complain about being associated with the sins of the cuckoo family – “How would you like to be seen as an accomplice of Harvey Weinstein or Jeffrey Epstein”? but they do.

Most moral vegetarians list fish and fowl as animals one should not eat. If beef cattle who could not feel pain were developed, then it would be permissible to eat them. KBJ: Martin seems to think that people who abstain from meat on the ground that meat-eating causes pain would not eat “beef cattle” even if they could not feel pain.
